With one of the largest collections of the bunch, this site has all the qualities I look for when it comes to navigating and finding content: tree navigation, categories, nice thumbnails and direct downloading. This one is great looking, easy to browse with tree navigation, categories and subcategories, lovely masonry thumbnails, and direct downloads that require no registration. It’s organized in categories, easy to navigate and has lovely renders of the material using all the maps. This site offers free seamless PBR textures with Diffuse, Normal, Displacement, Occlusion, Specularity and Roughness Maps.

Also, you don’t have to register or login to download, just click the download button when you find what you want, and you’re done. The Texture Warehouse offers free, high resolution textures to designers and 3D artists. I like this one because it has big thumbnails and you can see similar photos when you’re about to download one, so your options quickly multiply. What I like about it is that it’s organized with categories and sub-categories, it also lets you know with a label when a texture is seamless, which is very handy. This is a very easy site to navigate that has a very good amount of textures of all kinds.

This is why my criteria might differ from some, but now you know why, and I bet you’ll enjoy what these sites have to offer if you don’t know them. I, personally, find those not so appealing anymore and end up leaving much sooner than required to find what I was looking for. But some of the most visited and well-known websites are visually very old, hard to navigate, and haven’t updated their thumbnail sizes in ages. My thoughts behind this are the collections these sites have can and probably will grow overtime. I’m focusing more on user-friendliness, navigation and presentation, than on gross number of textures. These usually have categories that make it easier to find what you’re looking for. There are a lot of sites that provide free stock photos and most include textures, but while searching or browsing you’ll have to separate normal photos from textures, so I wanted to highlight websites that are specifically focused on textures. As digital artists or hobbyists, we often find ourselves in need of texture images, be it to use as a background, to finish a concept art piece, or as a material for a 3D model.
